macOS 27 Ends Intel Mac Support

Apple Inc. said its next major desktop operating system, macOS 27 , will run only on Macs powered by Apple silicon , ending major OS support for Intel-based models. The company disclosed the change during the Platforms State of the Union segment at WWDC 2025 , positioning the move as the next step in its multi-year shift away from Intel processors.

Under the plan outlined by Apple, macOS 26 Tahoe will be the last major macOS release that supports Intel chips. That means Intel Macs that can install macOS Tahoe will not be eligible for macOS 27 or later major versions, even if they remain otherwise functional and in use.

Apple indicated the change will affect several specific Intel-based Mac models, including the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro , the 2020 27-inch iMac , the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports , and the 2019 Mac Pro . These machines are compatible with macOS Tahoe, but Apple said they will not receive macOS 27 or subsequent major updates.

Apple also outlined a timeline for the next release cycle. The macOS 27 beta is anticipated in June 2026 , with a broader public release expected in September 2026 . The dates frame when Intel Mac owners will reach the end of the major-upgrade path, while Apple silicon systems move forward to the next generation of macOS features.

The announcement further reinforces Apple’s strategy of centering its software roadmap on its own chips, including the M-series family and the A18 Pro chip referenced in devices such as the MacBook Neo . Apple described the shift as a way to streamline software development and to take advantage of performance benefits tied to its custom silicon architecture.

Apple’s transition away from Intel began in 2020 , and the company framed macOS 27 as a milestone in that roadmap. With Intel support ending at macOS 26 Tahoe, future macOS features and optimizations will be designed solely around Apple silicon, aligning hardware and software development under a single architecture.
