Formula 1 is finalizing a formal agreement to host a Grand Prix in Rwanda by the 2030 season, marking the sport's first return to the African continent since 1993. This development bypasses the previously favored Kyalami circuit in South Africa, a move confirmed by South African officials.

Formula 1 Shifts to Rwanda

The agreement positions Rwanda as the sport's sole African host for its return. This decision follows extensive private lobbying efforts by prominent industry figures and signals a strategic shift for Formula 1. The sport is prioritizing new markets with significant institutional commitment and long-term infrastructure development over established, historic venues.

South Africa Concedes Bid

South African government officials, including Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, have publicly conceded the bidding process. McKenzie acknowledged Rwanda’s advanced state of negotiations and confirmed the timeline for the Rwandan Grand Prix. Despite this outcome, South African authorities stated that their region remains a candidate for future Formula 1 events, citing the potential for multiple African hosts on the calendar.

Hamilton's Advocacy for Africa

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has actively lobbied Formula 1 executives for years to secure a race on the African continent. Hamilton has consistently stated the importance of an African Grand Prix, even suggesting he would delay retirement until its realization. He previously engaged in private discussions with Rwandan officials, praising their dedication to securing a spot on the Formula 1 calendar.
