Lawmakers Demand DOD Probe After AI Report Nearly Sparked China Clash

Lawmakers on Monday demanded the Department of Defense open an investigation after an AI-generated intelligence report flagged a Chinese vessel in the Middle East as transporting components tied to a nuclear weapons program, a move they said nearly led to a military confrontation.

Officials said the report prompted heightened operational alerts and raised concerns inside Pentagon planning cells, though the department did not order kinetic action. Lawmakers said the episode exposed gaps in validation of machine-assisted intelligence and called for a review of the tools and oversight used in producing such reports.

Democrats on relevant committees asked the department to determine how the AI system reached its conclusion, to identify who reviewed the output before it reached commanders, and to report on any operational steps triggered by the assessment. Officials framed the case as an example of how automated analysis can escalate geopolitical risk when human checks fail to catch false positives.

The incident touches three immediate fault lines: trust in intelligence workflows, the rules for escalating military responses, and U.S.-China crisis management in contested regions. Lawmakers said they want to know whether policies need tightening to prevent algorithmic errors from translating into unintended confrontations.

They requested that the department brief Congress within 30 days on findings and corrective steps, and to make recommendations for safeguards on the use of AI in operational intelligence.
