KKR plans ₹6,000 crore investment in Petronas India renewables

KKR plans to invest more than ₹6,000 crore in Petronas’ Indian renewable-energy unit, The Economic Times reported in an Oct. 19 news article, citing people familiar with the matter and regulatory filings.

The proposed financing equals more than ₹60 billion and would support Gentari Renewable India Pte Ltd’s renewable-power and green-hydrogen projects, debt reduction and joint-venture stake purchases, the report said.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced using renewable electricity. Gentari previously bought 1.6 gigawatts of renewable projects from Brookfield; one gigawatt equals 1,000 megawatts of generation capacity.

Sapphire US Holdco LLC, a KKR vehicle, has applied to the Competition Commission of India, the country’s antitrust regulator, for approval to invest in Singapore-based Gentari Renewable India, according to filings cited by the report.

“The plan is to grow with the funding from KKR by building on the existing portfolio of projects,” an executive familiar with the development told ET.

The people cited said the structure would not immediately give KKR a holding in Gentari Renewable India, but would provide an option to own a stake later.

Gentari, Petronas’ renewable business, had been seeking a financial partner after the Brookfield portfolio purchase. ET said in June last year that Gentari had hired Standard Chartered Bank as adviser.

The report did not give a valuation for Gentari Renewable India, a closing timetable or a Competition Commission decision. KKR and Gentari did not respond to ET’s questions, according to the article.

Gentari has formed a joint venture with ReNew for solar, wind and hybrid power generation infrastructure and has a partnership with AM Green for hydrogen and ammonia production.
