Jürgen Klopp has reached an agreement on key points to become the next head coach of the German national football team, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed. The proposed contract is expected to run until 2030, following Julian Nagelsmann's departure after Germany's elimination from the 2026 World Cup.

His appointment is contingent on a formal release from his current contractual obligations with Red Bull, where he serves as head of global soccer. The DFB supervisory board and shareholders must also provide final approval to conclude the transition.

Nagelsmann's Departure Post-World Cup

Julian Nagelsmann stepped down on July 3, just days after Germany's last-16 exit from the 2026 World Cup. Germany had topped their group but were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32, a performance that drew public criticism and led to Nagelsmann indicating a desire to continue before his subsequent departure.

Klopp's Return to Management

Klopp has been out of club management since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season, where he led the club to Premier League and Champions League titles. He then took on a role with Red Bull and worked as a pundit for German television during the recent World Cup.

During his punditry, Klopp attracted attention for comments widely interpreted as critical of Nagelsmann's team selections. He notably suggested that Deniz Undav should start ahead of Jamal Musiala and later apologized for a "for now" remark about Nagelsmann's team selection, stating it "slipped out casually" and was not intended to disrupt the process.
