Indian exports get 100% tariff removal in New Zealand FTA
The agreement takes effect Oct. 20 and covers textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products, officials said.

India's free-trade agreement with New Zealand takes effect Oct. 20, with 100% of tariff lines on Indian exports set to move to zero, officials said on Monday.
The change gives Indian exporters full tariff-free access under the pact, compared with the previous tariff schedule, and applies across all covered product lines. Officials identified textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products as sectors expected to benefit from the tariff elimination.
Zero tariffs from Oct. 20
Sampath Kumar, an official at the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, said 100% of tariff lines would become zero under the India-New Zealand agreement. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade is India's trade administration body under the commerce ministry.
For companies, the mechanism is straightforward: a lower tariff at the border can reduce the landed cost of Indian goods in New Zealand, or allow exporters to preserve more margin if selling prices are unchanged. The effect will depend on product demand, freight costs, currency moves and how quickly buyers adjust orders.
The broader trade impact appears limited by the bilateral nature of the pact, but the sector effect could be more direct for exporters competing on price in categories named by officials. If tariff savings are passed through to buyers, Indian suppliers may gain price room; if not, the benefit sits more with exporter margins.
The next dated marker is Oct. 20, when the tariff schedule is due to take effect and exporters can test whether the zero-duty access changes order flows.
