Independent MP Helen Haines Hospitalized After Targeted Vehicle Attack
Independent MP Helen Haines is in critical condition after an alleged vehicle attack in Wangaratta; federal police and counter-terror units investigate.

Independent Member of Parliament Helen Haines remains in critical condition following an incident outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Authorities have taken a 43-year-old male suspect into custody after he allegedly struck the MP with a vehicle and was subsequently detained by bystanders. A knife was reportedly recovered from the suspect's vehicle at the scene.
The Australian Federal Police, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), and the joint counter-terror taskforce are investigating the incident. While officials have not confirmed a motive, the involvement of national security agencies indicates a high-level assessment of potential political motivation.
Government officials noted a documented increase in threats against high-office holders, with reports of harassing and threatening behavior rising from 951 to 1,067 in the most recent financial year. Leadership across the political spectrum has condemned the act, citing concerns regarding the normalization of political violence and the heightened security environment for elected representatives.
