Israel Approves 1,200 Housing Tenders in E1 Zone

The Israeli government has initiated tenders for the construction of approximately 1,200 housing units in the E1 area of the occupied West Bank, signaling a significant acceleration in settlement expansion. This move, confirmed in recent days, follows a long-standing policy shift aimed at consolidating Israeli control over the territory captured during the 1967 war.

The E1 project is strategically positioned to bisect the West Bank, effectively severing the northern region from the south and isolating East Jerusalem. International observers, including the United Nations and several Western governments, have characterized the development as an existential threat to the viability of a future Palestinian state. Since 1967, Israel has established roughly 160 settlements housing 700,000 residents, with construction rates increasing notably since the current coalition government took office in 2022.

This shift has facilitated the allocation of over 1 billion shekels ($360 million) for infrastructure projects, including new roads designed to integrate settlements while fragmenting Palestinian urban areas.
