A major heatwave is expected to stretch across large parts of the United States this week, putting more than 220 million people under potentially dangerous heat conditions around the July 4 holiday.

Forecasters say the greatest risk of record highs will be concentrated in the East and Midwest, where temperatures may approach the triple digits in several population centers.

Record heat risk rises for major US cities

New York City and Washington, DC, are among the locations that could near 100°F (37.7°C) as hot air builds under a persistent high-pressure system. Such setups can suppress cloud cover and rainfall, allowing heat to intensify over multiple days.

With holiday gatherings and travel underway, the timing raises concerns for outdoor events, fireworks, and extended time in the sun. Health agencies typically warn that heat can become hazardous quickly, particularly for older adults, young children, and people with underlying conditions.

The forecast also points to a broad footprint rather than an isolated spike, meaning overnight temperatures may stay elevated in some areas. Warm nights can increase health risks because the body has less opportunity to cool down after daytime highs.

High-pressure dome echoes Europe’s ongoing crisis

US meteorologists are tracking an upper-level high-pressure pattern that is being compared in strength to the system associated with a deadly heatwave still affecting much of Europe. That European event has been linked to about 1,300 deaths, underscoring how quickly extreme heat can translate into public-health impacts.

While the United States and Europe are experiencing different local conditions, the common driver is a stubborn high-pressure regime that favors prolonged heat. These patterns can also worsen air quality by trapping pollutants near the surface, adding stress for people with respiratory illness.

Emergency planners often focus on the compounding effects of heat, including higher electricity demand from air conditioning, increased risk of heat illness during outdoor work, and strain on vulnerable communities with limited cooling access.

Climate signal and El Niño add to late-year concerns

Researchers have also highlighted how climate change is altering the odds of extreme heat. An attribution study examining Europe’s heat found the event was unequivocally connected to human-driven warming, concluding that comparable June temperatures would have been “virtually impossible” 50 years ago.

The same analysis noted that such extremes would have been very unlikely even in the early 2000s, indicating how quickly the baseline has shifted. Attribution studies assess how much climate change influences the probability and intensity of specific events by comparing today’s climate with modelled worlds without added greenhouse gases.

Looking ahead, forecasters are also watching the Pacific Ocean for signs of a strengthening El Niño, the climate pattern that tends to tilt global temperatures upward. A strong El Niño is expected to arrive soon, and it can influence weather patterns that favor warmer conditions in many regions.

Together, the near-term US heatwave and the continued extremes abroad highlight the growing challenge of managing prolonged heat in a warming climate. In the coming days, key indicators will include whether the high-pressure system holds in place, how high nighttime temperatures remain, and whether power and health systems face sustained strain as July 4 approaches.
