Haunted Chocolatier targets Stardew’s mine fans in 4-year build
Eric Barone said the game remains a “town game,” but has no release window after more than four years in development.

Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone said Haunted Chocolatier is built around more action-RPG play in a British GQ interview cited by Kotaku on Oct. 13, after more than four years of development.
The distinction matters because Haunted Chocolatier follows Stardew Valley, a life-sim hit whose combat-heavy mines split players between cozy routines and dungeon runs, while Barone still has not announced a release window.
Barone described the new game as a sharper turn toward adventuring and character progression. “It’s for the people in Stardew Valley that go into the mines,” he told British GQ, according to Kotaku.
He also said Haunted Chocolatier “is more of an action RPG—the main focus is more about adventuring, finding equipment and getting more powerful. There are monsters, there are boss fights.” The comments give the clearest public framing yet for how the game may differ from Stardew Valley without abandoning its social-sim base.
Barone said the project is still what he calls a “town game,” according to Kotaku. That suggests the game will continue to include the local-life structure associated with Stardew Valley: arriving somewhere new, meeting residents and building a business, though the supplied report does not give new mechanics beyond that broad description.
The combat emphasis was not entirely new. Kotaku said earlier looks at Haunted Chocolatier had already shown bosses, shields that can stun enemies and other off-hand weapons. The latest interview puts those pieces into a clearer design pitch: less optional cave-diving on the side, more adventuring near the center.
Barone also spoke about the weight of expectations around the project. “Everyone’s watching me, and if I don’t do things a certain way, it might disappoint millions of people,” he told British GQ, according to Kotaku.
The timeline adds to that pressure. Kotaku said Haunted Chocolatier has been in development for more than four years, close to the length of Stardew Valley’s pre-release development. The article also said Barone has not given a launch window, and linked that uncertainty to earlier comments that the new game is planned to be “way bigger” than Stardew Valley.
Kotaku said Barone has cited David Lynch as an inspiration and that Haunted Chocolatier is expected to carry slightly darker themes. Those details point to a different mood from Stardew Valley, but the report does not include a release date, platform list or pricing.
