Greek Basketball Bribery Scandal Triggers Court Delays and Impending Governance Overhaul
A bribery investigation into Greek basketball officials has reached the testimony phase, threatening the federation’s leadership and governance.

A Greek court has granted a three-day postponement for six suspects involved in a major match-fixing and bribery investigation. The suspects, including the Hellenic Basketball Federation president and several high-profile referees, remain in custody due to flight risk concerns. Official testimonies are scheduled to proceed in stages through early next week.
Authorities are investigating approximately 50 matches spanning a ten-year period, supported by testimony from two protected witnesses. During recent raids, police seized digital evidence and approximately $1.01 million in cash. Defense counsel has formally denied all allegations, characterizing the evidence as legitimate assets and the prosecution as a conspiracy.
The investigation poses significant governance risks for the Hellenic Basketball Federation. Should formal charges be filed, the federation board faces a 15-day window to replace its president. Failure to comply will trigger state intervention, resulting in the dissolution of the board and the scheduling of new elections.
