McIlroy Suggests LIV Golfers Return to PGA Tour Rory McIlroy, a prominent golfer, stated on Friday that allowing players who joined LIV Golf to return to the PGA Tour would constitute "good business." This statement follows the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia's announcement in April that it would cease its multi-billion dollar financial backing of LIV Golf by the end of the year. LIV Golf has since indicated a "strategic evolution" to secure new investors.
McIlroy, a Masters champion and former critic of LIV Golf, questioned the league's ability to attract new financial support, noting that if a sovereign wealth fund deems it too expensive, it suggests broader financial challenges. He emphasized that any action strengthening the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour should be considered, aligning with PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp's stance on enhancing the tours.
The potential return of LIV Golf players to the PGA Tour remains uncertain, with some players, like Bryson DeChambeau, indicating alternative plans if LIV Golf does not secure new funding. Other players, including Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm, have already made arrangements to continue playing on traditional tours or have struck deals to participate in both LIV and DP World Tour events.
McIlroy acknowledged his previous judgmental stance on players who joined LIV Golf but now supports pathways that strengthen established tours.
