German Automotive Sector Faces Structural Contraction
The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) warned on Thursday that the European car sector faces a systemic employment collapse unless significant structural reforms are implemented to counter rising competition from Chinese manufacturers. The warning coincides with Volkswagen preparing a proposal to cut up to 100,000 jobs by 2030, a move that has triggered widespread industrial action across Germany.
The current crisis is driven by a severe imbalance between production capacity and market demand. Industry data indicates that European production capacity currently exceeds demand by more than 5 million vehicles annually, equivalent to the output of 35 manufacturing sites. This overcapacity, coupled with shifting global market dynamics, has rendered existing business models unsustainable.
To mitigate further industrial decline, the VDA suggested that opening domestic production facilities to foreign ownership may be necessary to preserve local employment. The mechanism of decline involves high operational costs meeting stagnant consumer demand, leading to inevitable plant closures. Without immediate strategic pivots, the sector faces a long-term erosion of its manufacturing base, impacting an industry that directly and indirectly employs approximately 3 million people across the region.
