Gaza civil-defence captain seeks family after more than a year apart

Captain Moumen, a Gaza Civil Defence unit captain, tries to reunite with his family after more than a year apart in an Al Jazeera Witness documentary published Oct. 18.

The documentary shows the search a day after a “ceasefire” is announced, as Al Jazeera describes hundreds of thousands of people moving through Gaza without phone contact.

The programme follows Moumen’s wife and children as they leave the Nuseirat refugee camp, where Al Jazeera said they had been sheltering from constant bombing, and head north along Gaza’s coastal road.

Al Jazeera said the family carries its possessions on its back and crosses difficult terrain while Moumen waits at the end of the route. With no signal to call and large crowds on the move, finding them becomes the central uncertainty of the account.

The source material does not identify the announced ceasefire’s terms, its parties or whether Moumen is ultimately reunited with his family.

Gaza Family Reunion is credited as a documentary film by Mohammed Sawwaf, Salah al-Haw, Ibrahim al-Otla and Mohammed Masharawi.
