Finnish Authorities Suspend Google Data Center Construction Over Environmental Compliance

Finnish regulatory authorities have ordered an immediate suspension of construction activities at two planned data center sites in Muhos and Kajaani. The directive follows findings that preparatory work, including land clearing and infrastructure development, proceeded without the mandatory environmental impact assessments.

The developer must submit a formal explanation and compliance plan by October 14. Failure to adhere to these requirements may result in formal enforcement proceedings by the supervisory agency.

This project is part of a broader €13 billion investment strategy intended to support regional infrastructure for search and artificial intelligence services. The suspension introduces potential delays to the 2027–2028 construction timeline and complicates the company’s long-term operational commitments in the region.

While the developer maintains that it acted in good faith under existing forestry regulations, it has acknowledged a failure to meet internal environmental standards. The outcome of this regulatory intervention will determine the viability of the current site development plans and may influence future large-scale industrial projects in Finland.
