FBI arrests woman accused of spying on Taiwan president's son

The FBI arrested one woman at Los Angeles International Airport on October 4, 2026, accusing her of spying on the son of Taiwan’s president.

Officials said the suspect, identified as Wanying “Heather” Zhang, was detained while transiting through Los Angeles and that investigators allege she conducted surveillance in Seattle of Ting‑Yu Lai, collecting information about his family and home.

Alleged surveillance of Taiwan president's son

Officials described the case as an investigation into activities directed by a foreign government and said the suspect is accused of acting as an agent of the People’s Republic of China. They declined to detail the methods of surveillance or the evidence collected, citing an ongoing probe.

U.S. authorities said the arrest follows inquiries by federal counterintelligence teams and that the matter has potential diplomatic implications for relations involving Washington, Taipei and Beijing. No government has issued a formal response at the time of the arrest, officials said.

Federal procedure generally requires an initial magistrate appearance within roughly 48 hours of arrest; if held in federal custody, that timetable would point to an appearance on October 6, 2026. Officials said they will provide additional details as the case moves through federal court.
