Formula One management has set a mid-September deadline to confirm the host venues for the final races of the 2026 season, as organisers weigh contingency plans tied to regional security concerns. Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali said Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain scheduled to stage the closing events, but alternatives are being prepared if conditions change.
Under the current plan, the final rounds are set for November 29 and December 6. Domenicali confirmed that if those dates cannot be delivered in their Middle Eastern locations, Formula One is prepared to move the season-ending races to European circuits.
Contingency planning linked to regional instability
The push to lock in a decision by mid-September follows earlier changes to the calendar. Races planned for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in April were cancelled, with officials pointing to an evolving geopolitical landscape and concerns connected to ongoing conflicts.
Formula One’s current approach aims to prevent late-stage disruption to the season’s closing stretch. The September cutoff is intended to provide clarity for teams, promoters, and fans as travel and freight planning intensifies ahead of the last two rounds.
Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain pencilled in Domenicali said the two Middle Eastern venues remain the scheduled hosts for the finale, while organisers keep open a relocation option if instability makes the original plan unworkable. The aim, he said, is to be ready to change venues without losing races from the calendar.
Imola highlighted as a leading European alternative
Imola in Italy has been identified as a primary candidate should a European replacement be required. Organisers are considering that option even though late-year dates can bring weather-related challenges in parts of Europe.
The contingency discussion centres on preserving the structure of the season rather than rewriting it at short notice. Domenicali reiterated that Formula One intends to maintain a 24-race calendar for 2026 despite the current disruptions affecting parts of the region.
Weather and logistics become part of the decision
Shifting the finale to Europe would change operational requirements for teams and suppliers, particularly with freight movements and staffing. It would also alter travel plans for ticket-holders who may have expected a Middle East conclusion.
