Meta Restructures, Shifts Staff to AI Initiatives

Meta Platforms Inc. on Monday detailed a significant restructuring plan, including layoffs and organizational changes, aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) workflows. The company will transfer approximately 7,000 employees to new AI-related initiatives and eliminate managerial roles, impacting about 20% of its workforce globally.

The restructuring, outlined in an internal memo from Chief People Officer Janelle Gale, involves a reduction of 10% of Meta's employees this week, with further cuts anticipated later in the year. This initiative is part of a broader company overhaul to integrate AI agents into product offerings and internal operations, reflecting a trend of AI-linked job cuts across the U.S. tech sector.

Employees are being transferred to teams such as Applied AI Engineering (AAI) and Agent Transformation Accelerator (ATA) XFN, which focus on developing AI agents to automate tasks. Central Analytics will measure productivity for agent development. The company has also closed 6,000 open roles. These changes have prompted employee protests, including a petition signed by over 1,000 individuals against the use of mouse-tracking software for AI training.
