The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has finalized the venue list for the 2027 Ashes series, with all five Test matches designated for grounds in the Midlands and southern England. This decision excludes historically significant northern venues such as Headingley in Leeds and Old Trafford in Manchester, a move that prompted considerable criticism in previous announcements from regional stakeholders.

Northern Venues Excluded from 2027 Series

The five-Test series against Australia is scheduled to begin on June 18 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Subsequent matches will be held at Lord’s on June 30, Edgbaston in Birmingham on July 8, and the Rose Bowl near Southampton for the fourth Test starting July 21. The series is set to conclude at the Oval in London, with play commencing on July 29.

Previous Objections Resurface Over Selection

The absence of Headingley, a site of numerous iconic Ashes encounters, and Old Trafford from the 2027 rotation is consistent with an initial announcement made in 2023. This earlier decision drew strong objections from figures including Andy Burnham, who served as Mayor of Greater Manchester at the time.

Despite their exclusion from the 2027 schedule, both Old Trafford and Headingley are expected to host Ashes fixtures in 2031, indicating a rotational strategy rather than a permanent removal from the series’ long-term plans.

Rose Bowl Debuts as Ashes Test Ground

The Rose Bowl will host its first Ashes Test match, becoming the tenth venue in the United Kingdom to stage a men's Test in this historic rivalry. This introduction of a new southern venue aligns with the ECB's updated approach to venue distribution for the 2027 itinerary. The most recent Ashes series held in England in 2023 ended in a 2-2 draw, while Australia secured a 4-1 victory on home soil during the 2025-26 Ashes.
