The Conservative Party has proposed a £10 billion investment to develop a domestic air and missile defense system, designated the "Britannia Shield." The program aims to integrate advanced radar, command-and-control infrastructure, and interceptor missiles to counter emerging aerial threats, including drones and long-range missiles.
Funding for the initiative is intended to be drawn from a proposed increase in defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030. This represents a significant shift from current policy, which allocates approximately £790 million for integrated air and missile defense under the existing Defence Investment Plan.

Strategic analysts note that the UK has historically prioritized nuclear deterrence and NATO-integrated defense over localized missile interception. The proposed system would require a fundamental restructuring of current military procurement priorities, which currently rely on Royal Navy assets for coastal protection.
Implementation is projected to occur in two phases, with initial deployable capability targeted within five years. The proposal reflects a broader trend among European nations to bolster sovereign air defense capabilities in response to evolving regional security threats.
