Escalating Student Protests in France Result in Serious Injuries and Institutional Disruption

A 15-year-old student sustained a life-altering injury after handling a police stun grenade during ongoing nationwide school protests. This incident follows reports of a 16-year-old suffering permanent vision loss from a suspected rubber bullet, prompting formal complaints regarding police conduct. These events have intensified public scrutiny of government crowd-control tactics.

Approximately 500 secondary schools remain partially or fully closed as student-led blockades persist across the country. University facilities are also experiencing widespread disruptions, with up to 40 buildings currently blockaded. The government reports that approximately 5,000 individuals have been arrested since the protests began in late September.

In response to the unrest, the Prime Minister has directed cabinet members to address grievances regarding teacher shortages, infrastructure decay, and school scheduling. Proposals are mandated by the end of the month, though labor unions have dismissed these measures as insufficient. Further national demonstrations are scheduled, involving a coalition of students, teachers, and public sector workers, posing a significant challenge to government stability and public order.
