Colgate Defeats Cornell 20-7 in Football Season Opener

Colgate University's football team secured a 20-7 victory over Cornell University in the season opener for both teams on Saturday. The Raiders established an early lead, capitalizing on their prior game experience, while Cornell struggled to convert offensive drives into points.

Colgate Builds Early Lead

Colgate, entering the game with a 3-1 record, quickly demonstrated its advantage. Quarterback Jake Stearney connected on an 85-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, giving the Raiders a 7-0 lead. Head coach Dan Swanstrom acknowledged Colgate's earlier start to the season provided a significant edge in the initial minutes of play.

First Quarter Dominance

The Raiders extended their lead to 14-0 following a 14-play drive that culminated in their second touchdown. A subsequent field goal further increased Colgate's advantage to 17-0 by the end of the first quarter. Another field goal in the second quarter brought the score to 20-0 at halftime, as both teams faced difficulties reaching the end zone.

Cornell's Second Half Efforts

Cornell's defense generated a spark in the third quarter when senior safety Tommy MacPherson intercepted a pass. Later, MacPherson forced a fumble, recovered by senior linebacker Ian Wall, after Colgate's backup quarterback Joey Tomasso entered the game. Despite these defensive plays, Cornell's offense remained scoreless through the third quarter.

Offensive Breakthrough in Fourth Quarter

In the final quarter, Cornell's offense found its rhythm. Quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio completed a 22-yard pass to senior wide receiver Brendan Lee and then rushed for 22 yards himself. Bass-Sulpizio subsequently connected with junior running back Jordan Triplett for Cornell's first touchdown of the season. Kicker Alan Zhao added the extra point, narrowing the deficit to 14 points.

Outlook for Cornell's Season

The loss marks a challenging start for Cornell, which now holds an 0-1 record. Coach Swanstrom indicated a need to evaluate team performance and player positioning, stating that the biggest improvement in football often occurs between the first and second weeks of the season. Cornell will host Yale University (0-1) in its Ivy League opener on Saturday, September 26, at Schoellkopf Field.
