Broncos extend Sean Payton with five-year deal through 2030 season

The Denver Broncos said Thursday that head coach Sean Payton has agreed to a new five-year contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 season. The new deal replaces Payton’s previous contract, which had two years remaining. The agreement also aligns Payton’s timeline with general manager George Paton, whose contract also runs through 2030.

Payton said discussions accelerated after the Broncos completed Paton’s extension earlier this offseason. Financial terms were not disclosed, though Payton was already widely viewed as one of the NFL’s highest-paid head coaches under his prior agreement.

Denver has gone 32-19 across Payton’s first three seasons. The Broncos finished 14-3 last season, reached the AFC Championship Game and lost 10-7 to the New England Patriots, with starting quarterback Bo Nix sidelined by a fractured right ankle.

The Broncos had missed the playoffs in each of the seven seasons before Payton was hired. The organization framed the extension as a continuation of the stability and on-field progress it says has taken hold since his arrival.

Penner points to alignment across football operations

Owner and CEO Greg Penner said in a statement that Payton has led an “impressive turnaround” over the past three seasons and credited the partnership between Payton and Paton for creating alignment and stability across football operations. Penner said the club is “thrilled” for Payton to continue leading the team as head coach.

Speaking after Thursday’s OTA practice, Payton emphasized the importance of organizational alignment with ownership and the front office. Asked how much longer he wants to coach, Payton referenced the length of the new agreement and said he still has “a lot of juice left.”

Payton returned to coaching with Denver ahead of the 2023 season after stepping away from the New Orleans Saints following the 2021 season. Denver acquired Payton’s rights in a trade with New Orleans in 2023, sending a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick, and receiving a 2024 third-round pick in return.

Offseason continuity includes roster and facility investment

Denver has prioritized continuity this offseason. The Broncos re-signed 17 of the 21 players who were scheduled to reach free agency, and the team is set to open a new $172 million team complex later this month.

The roster has also been boosted by a trade for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, described by the club as the team’s biggest addition. With Payton and Paton now on matching timelines, Denver will look to build on last season’s results and sustain its return to contention.

Denver’s next major checkpoint will come later this summer as the Broncos move from OTAs into training camp, with the front office and coaching staff now committed through the same 2030 window.
