Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly said Tuesday that he suffered a stroke about six weeks ago and spent a few days in the hospital, but now feels “really good.” Kelly, 66, disclosed the health setback while speaking publicly at a ceremony tied to the Buffalo Bills’ new stadium project in Orchard Park, New York.
Kelly said his latest medical scans have come back clean. He added that he is dealing with lingering issues with his eyesight and hearing, but described himself as physically stable as he continues his recovery.
Kelly is one of the most recognizable figures in Bills history and remains active around the organization. He said he is looking ahead to being present when the team opens its new stadium in 2026.
Health history and recent update
Kelly has dealt with significant health issues in the past decade, including multiple bouts of oral cancer. He previously underwent surgeries and treatment after a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the upper jawbone, and later received chemotherapy when cancer was found in his maxillary sinus.
He also had additional surgeries in 2018 related to oral cancer and reconstruction of his upper jaw. On Tuesday, Kelly said the most recent scans were “all good,” framing the stroke as a setback but not one that has altered his outlook.
Legacy with the Bills and connection to the region
Kelly played for the Buffalo Bills from 1986 to 1996 and led the franchise to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, a run that remains a defining era for the club. He continues to live in the Western New York area and frequently participates in team-related events and community appearances.
Kelly said he is eager to experience the atmosphere in the new stadium once it opens, highlighting the importance of the venue for fans and the next generation of players. For now, his focus remains on continuing to feel better as he tracks his recovery progress.
Kelly’s next public appearances are expected to depend on how he continues to respond in the weeks ahead and on the Bills’ schedule of stadium and team events.
