Microsoft founder Bill Gates testified before the U.S. House Oversight Committee on June 10, stating that the late financier Jeffrey Epstein attempted to leverage knowledge of his extramarital affairs to maintain their professional association. The closed-door testimony, released in a transcript on Tuesday, details how Gates perceived draft emails from Epstein as a mechanism to exert pressure, though he confirmed no formal blackmail demands were ever delivered.

The mechanism of this interaction involved Epstein utilizing his access to Gates’s personal information to attempt to force the tech executive to remain within his social and professional orbit. Gates, who began his association with Epstein in 2011, characterized the relationship as a significant error in judgment, noting that he was aware of Epstein’s prior criminal history but prioritized the financier’s potential to facilitate global health funding.
