Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigned his position Monday, five months after federal agents executed search warrants at his residence and district headquarters. The departure follows a period of administrative leave for Carvalho, who had previously denied any wrongdoing regarding the ongoing federal inquiry.
The investigation centers on the district's former contract with AllHere, an education technology firm that received a 3 million dollar payment for an artificial intelligence chatbot before filing for bankruptcy. The company's founder, Joanna Smith-Griffin, faces federal charges of securities fraud, wire fraud, and identity theft. FBI agents conducted searches at the district offices, Carvalho’s home, and a Florida property linked to a former AllHere associate in February.
Andres Chait, currently serving as acting superintendent, will maintain leadership of the nation's second-largest school district until the Board of Education appoints a permanent successor. While authorities have not formally charged Carvalho with any crimes, the resignation marks the conclusion of his tenure, which began in 2022. The district continues to cooperate with federal investigators as the probe into the procurement process remains active.
