University of North Carolina athletes are facing increased scrutiny over alleged driving and parking violations involving vehicles financed through Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, according to a WRAL report.
The report cited concerns including speeding, reckless driving and unauthorized parking — including in spaces reserved for people with disabilities — which have prompted internal complaints to athletic department officials.
UNC professor Mark Peifer has raised the issue with athletic director Bubba Cunningham, including in an email questioning whether the program can rein in player conduct and warning that the incidents are harming the university’s reputation. The concerns were described as primarily involving a subset of the football team.
In an email dated April 2026 and referenced in the WRAL report, Cunningham acknowledged the complaints and expressed disappointment.
The situation highlights the challenges athletic departments can face in managing off-field conduct in an era where players may have access to NIL-funded assets, even as the university navigates reputational and compliance considerations.
