Jeremy Doku to Rejoin Belgium in Seattle After Son’s Birth

Belgium forward Jeremy Doku is set to rejoin the national team camp in Seattle on Tuesday after leaving temporarily for the birth of his first child in London, officials said. The 24-year-old had been cleared to travel following consultations with medical staff. He had already been ruled out of Sunday’s match against Iran due to illness.

The Belgian Football Association said Doku and his wife welcomed a baby boy and that the mother and child are both doing well. Team doctor Brahim Hacene said the player had been receiving treatment for several days, allowing him to fly without medical risk.

Doku’s decision to be present for the birth drew attention in the build-up to Belgium’s opening matches, after he indicated he wanted to be with his family if the timing coincided with the tournament. He started Belgium’s first game against Egypt, but was later replaced, before missing the Iran match.

Presenter comments trigger backlash

The episode also prompted controversy in France after a television presenter questioned the decision and described fathers as “useless” at childbirth. The remarks sparked an online backlash and the network later apologised and distanced itself from the comments. The presenter was stood down from her show.

Belgium have drawn both of their matches so far and are seeking to progress in a campaign described as part of a wider rebuild following the end of the team’s “golden generation.” Their scoreless draw with Iran in Los Angeles drew criticism over the performance.

Belgium face New Zealand with qualification at stake

Doku is expected to be available for Belgium’s final group match against New Zealand on Friday. Officials said a win would guarantee Belgium a place in the round of 32.

Belgium’s staff will monitor Doku’s condition after his return to camp, with the final group fixture set to decide whether the team advances to the knockout phase.
