Apple Introduces Encrypted RCS Messaging in iOS 26.5

Apple Inc. released its iOS 26.5 software update on May 13, 2026, for iPhone 11 series and newer models, including the iPhone 17 series. The update's primary new feature is the introduction of end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging, which aims to secure communications between iPhones and Android devices. This functionality is currently in beta and requires carrier support for full implementation.

The encrypted RCS messaging protocol replaces traditional SMS for cross-platform communication, ensuring that messages exchanged between iPhones and Android devices are unreadable during transmission. Users will identify encrypted RCS chats by a new lock icon. This encryption is enabled by default and will be progressively activated for both new and existing RCS conversations.

While the highly anticipated new Siri was not included in this release, analysts expect its debut with iOS 27, scheduled for announcement at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8. Other additions in iOS 26.5 include a new "Pride Luminance" wallpaper and a "Suggested Places" feature in Maps, which provides recommendations based on local trends and user activity. The update also incorporates over 50 security fixes.
