Yemen fighting kills more than 270 in 24 hours

Officials on both sides said fighting in Yemen killed more than 270 combatants over 24 hours, following a counter-offensive by the internationally recognized government in the southwest.

Government officials speaking on condition of anonymity said 115 troops died and dozens were wounded, including from missile and drone strikes; officials on both sides put the overall toll above 270.

Southwest counter-offensive intensifies

Officials said the government launched the counter-offensive last month to recover territory taken by Iran-backed Houthi fighters, and that clashes have concentrated in multiple southwest provinces. Local commanders and government spokespeople have issued competing claims over advances and losses, with battlefield reports updated by both sides.

If fighting spreads toward coastal approaches, the mechanics of disruption are clear: shipping lanes could face longer transits or higher insurance premiums, and energy transit risks would rise through rerouting and delays. Those transmission channels would translate battlefield disruption into regional economic and commercial pressure.

Monitor official casualty and territorial reports through Oct. 8 for clearer signals on whether the counter-offensive consolidates gains, stalls, or prompts outside diplomatic or military responses.
