Morris Aims to Revitalize 49ers Defense

San Francisco, California – Raheem Morris, the new defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, is expected to implement a more adaptable defensive scheme to improve the team's performance, following his appointment in February. Morris, reuniting with head coach Kyle Shanahan, takes over a defense that ranked 13th in scoring defense (21.8 points per game) but struggled in efficiency and pass rush during the previous season.

Morris's strategy involves tailoring his scheme to player strengths, drawing on his experience with multiple defensive philosophies. The 49ers' defense finished last in sacks (20), 31st in pressures (157), and 29th in pass rush win rate (29.2%) last year. While the team traditionally favored four-man fronts, Morris indicated a willingness to incorporate more five-man fronts, a tactic he frequently used in Atlanta, to create multiplicity in both the front and back end of the defense.

Key personnel, including defensive end Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner, are expected to be central to Morris's plans. The acquisition of defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa and the drafting of Romello Height suggest an emphasis on enhancing the pass rush.
