Virgin Group to Enter Cross-Channel Rail Market by 2030

Virgin Group has announced plans to launch high-speed rail services between London and continental Europe by 2030. The operator has secured track access in the United Kingdom through 2040 and finalized an agreement to utilize the Temple Mills international depot for maintenance.

This entry marks the first direct competition for the incumbent cross-Channel operator since the Channel Tunnel opened. The company has commissioned 12 trains from Alstom and intends to integrate its rail operations with existing airline and hospitality networks to capture market share.

The cross-Channel rail sector faces further shifts as state-owned Italian rail operators also prepare to enter the market. These competitors have initiated significant capital expenditure on rolling stock, signaling a broader expansion of high-speed capacity through the Channel Tunnel.
