Wemby's Historic Triple-Double Not Enough for Spurs

Wembanyama Records Historic Triple-Double in Spurs Loss San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama achieved a triple-double with 12 blocks, 11 points, and 15 rebounds on Monday night during Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite this individual performance, the Spurs lost the game 104-102. Wembanyama's 12 blocks set a new NBA playoffs record, making him only the third player in postseason history to record a triple-double with blocks, joining Andrew Bynum and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Wembanyama, at 22 years and 120 days old, became the youngest Spurs player to achieve a playoff triple-double, surpassing Tim Duncan's record from 2002. However, his offensive efficiency was low, shooting 29% from the field and missing all eight of his 3-point attempts. This marked the most 3-point misses without a make by a player in Spurs playoff history.

The Minnesota Timberwolves' defense, particularly from Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle, contributed to Wembanyama's offensive struggles. The Timberwolves contested 14 of Wembanyama's 17 shot attempts, limiting him to 5-of-14 shooting on those plays. San Antonio's overall 3-point shooting also declined significantly, from 42% in previous playoff games to 27.8% in Game 1.
