Ugandan Opposition Leader Hospitalized After Collapse

Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye was admitted to an intensive care unit in Kampala on Wednesday after collapsing during a treason trial at the High Court. The 70-year-old politician, who has been in state detention since November 2024, lost consciousness while challenging the court's decision to appoint state-funded legal representation.

Besigye is currently held at Mulago National Referral Hospital under heavy security. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, reported that the politician was unresponsive to stimuli following the incident. The collapse occurred amid ongoing legal proceedings where Besigye and his aide, Obeid Lutale, face treason charges, a capital offense in Uganda. Prosecutors allege the pair plotted to overthrow the government of President Yoweri Museveni.

The detention of Besigye has faced significant procedural challenges, including the recent arrest of his lead counsel, Erias Lukwago, and the denial of entry to his international legal team. Family members and opposition figures have characterized the trial conditions as a violation of basic rights, citing the defendant's deteriorating health. While his personal physician has been granted access to the facility, the incident has intensified domestic and international scrutiny regarding the treatment of political detainees within the Ugandan judicial system.
