US sanctions Iran automakers, rail firms

The US Treasury on Thursday added Iran’s leading automakers and several major rail companies to its sanctions list, officials said, and also targeted a Russia-linked "A7" shadow banking network accused of helping Tehran evade restrictions.

Khodro and SAIPA sanctioned

Officials characterized A7 as a shadow banking network tied to Russian intermediaries and said it had facilitated transactions that circumvent Iranian sanctions. The designations block US persons from dealing with the listed entities and can freeze any assets subject to US jurisdiction, officials added.

Market and policy analysts expect the steps to raise near-term geopolitical risk around Iran’s trade routes and cross-border financing, particularly for sectors reliant on imports and logistical links. Observers noted the move could complicate economic ties between Iran and third-country partners that handle logistics or finance for the sanctioned firms.

Watch for any follow-up guidance from the Treasury this week; markets will monitor developments through Oct. 8, 2026, for possible secondary actions or clarification.

Officials said the measures cover Khodro and SAIPA and affiliated entities, which together account for more than 90% of Iran’s domestic passenger vehicle market. The department said the move aims to curb finance and trade channels that sustain key transport sectors.
