Ukraine president discusses peace efforts with Roman Abramovich

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that Russian magnate Roman Abramovich met him in Kyiv, offering to convey a peace message to the Kremlin. This interaction, disclosed during talks in London, marks the first official acknowledgment by Zelenskiy regarding Abramovich's direct involvement in negotiations within Ukraine.

Zelenskiy stated that Abramovich arrived in Kyiv, expressing a desire to transmit a direct message from the Ukrainian leader to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian head of state emphasized that this communication was intended to remain confidential, without public announcements.

Diplomatic Channels and Red Lines

President Zelenskiy revealed that the Russian side sought to understand Kyiv's readiness for concessions through this back channel. He reiterated Ukraine's firm position regarding the Donbas region, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk, asserting that Ukraine would not abandon its territory.

Zelenskiy stressed that Ukraine would not cede victory to Russia and would not withdraw from these eastern regions where its forces maintain control over approximately one-fifth of Donetsk. This stance underscores Kyiv's unwavering commitment to its territorial integrity.

Abramovich's Continued Role in Conflict Resolution

Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, has been subject to international sanctions following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Despite these restrictions, he has periodically engaged in conflict resolution efforts.

The magnate played a notable, albeit ultimately unsuccessful, part in early negotiations to halt the conflict and in securing the Black Sea grain shipment deal. While his visibility has decreased, this most recent interaction confirms his continued, albeit discreet, involvement in seeking resolutions.

The Kremlin has consistently maintained that Russia will not cease fighting until Ukraine abandons the Donbas region. Zelenskiy, however, firmly opposes meeting Putin in Russia or Belarus, instead indicating a willingness to accept a ceasefire along existing front lines as a pathway to de-escalation.
