Ukraine Continues Strikes on Russian Energy Infrastructure Despite U.S. Pressure

Ukraine has intensified its campaign against Russian oil refineries, including recent strikes in the Samara and Oryol regions. These operations have reportedly disabled approximately 45% of Russia’s refining capacity, forcing the state to extend its diesel export ban through October.

U.S. leadership has formally requested that Kyiv cease these operations, citing concerns that the resulting global diesel shortage is driving domestic fuel prices to record highs. This economic pressure has become a significant political liability ahead of upcoming midterm elections.

Kyiv maintains that the strikes are a necessary strategic response to ongoing Russian bombardment of Ukrainian urban centers and energy infrastructure. Officials indicate that these operations will continue as long as Moscow persists in its current military campaign, effectively rejecting calls for an energy-sector ceasefire.
