Ukraine Disrupts Crimean Energy and Logistics

Ukraine has effectively severed energy and fuel supply lines to Crimea following a coordinated ten-day military campaign that began on July 6. The operation, designated Molochka, utilizes long-range drone strikes and targeted sabotage to paralyze Russian logistics across the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. Ukrainian forces have successfully struck 147 vessels, primarily feeder tankers, effectively halting the transit of oil and gasoline to the peninsula. By July 13, Russian occupation authorities in Crimea declared a state of emergency, acknowledging that fuel distribution schedules are no longer viable. The disruption extends to critical infrastructure, with Ukrainian strikes disabling the Saky thermal power plant and 14 electrical substations, leading to widespread power instability.

The campaign represents a strategic shift in Ukraine's economic warfare, aiming to starve Russian front-line operations of fuel while simultaneously targeting deep-territory refining capacity. Between January and June 2026, Ukraine conducted approximately 700 long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, resulting in estimated damages of $6.1 billion. Russian officials have characterized the strikes as acts of terrorism, while local authorities in Crimea have implemented emergency measures, including the distribution of generators and the deferral of business loan repayments, to mitigate the impact of the ongoing energy crisis.
