Trump urges Zelensky replacement over refinery strikes

President Trump called for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be replaced after saying Ukraine should stop striking Russian diesel refineries, escalating a public clash over Kyiv’s war tactics. Reaction pending.

Trump said Ukraine should halt attacks on Russia’s diesel refineries and said Zelensky should be replaced by someone prepared to reach a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The remarks put fresh pressure on Kyiv at a point when energy infrastructure remains a central target set in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Trump targets Kyiv refinery campaign

The comments tie US political pressure directly to Ukraine’s strikes on Russian fuel assets. Diesel refineries matter because they sit between Russia’s crude production base and the military, transport and agricultural fuel markets that depend on processed products.

For Ukraine, the mechanism is military and economic: attacks on refining capacity can strain Russian logistics and cut into exportable fuel flows. For Russia, the risk is that refinery disruptions create domestic supply pressure while the Kremlin continues to fund and supply the war.

The geopolitical effect turns on whether Trump’s remarks become policy. If Washington links future support to limits on Ukrainian strikes, Kyiv’s room to target Russian energy assets could narrow, Russia’s fuel system would face less direct pressure, and global diesel markets would have one fewer disruption channel.

If Kyiv continues the campaign instead, the company-level effect falls on Russian refiners and fuel distributors, while the wider energy sector faces a higher risk premium around diesel supply. The next marker is whether the White House or Kyiv clarifies the position by October 11, 2026.
