Officials said the meeting left three major items unresolved: Taiwan's political status, whether Beijing would curb assistance to Iran's military or nuclear programs, and whether the two sides would agree binding rules for cooperation or competition in artificial intelligence.
Taiwan, Iran and AI unsettled Taiwan remains the most sensitive item, officials said. No new security guarantees or diplomatic understandings were announced, leaving regional partners without fresh bilateral commitments to point to.
On Iran and AI, officials said Beijing offered no new limits on military or nuclear-related assistance and that both delegations agreed to study technical cooperation on AI but set no enforcement mechanism. That leaves uncertainty for regional security planning and for companies seeking a predictable framework for AI standards.
Officials said aides from both sides will hold technical-level meetings to follow up and that national security teams are expected to press for clarifications in the coming days.
Officials said further statements or additional talks are likely by October 1, 2026.
