Tropical Storm Moke Approaches Hawaii Amid Recovery

Hawaii is bracing for Tropical Storm Moke, which is projected to bring significant rainfall to parts of the archipelago. This comes as the region continues to address recovery operations following the impact of Hurricane Lala just last week. Emergency services across the islands have initiated preparedness protocols in anticipation of the new storm's arrival.

As of Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time, Tropical Storm Moke was situated approximately 684 kilometers south of Hilo. The system was tracking west-northwest at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds registered at 85 kilometers per hour.

Expected Path and Rainfall

Forecasters from the Hurricane Center anticipate that Tropical Storm Moke will pass south of Hawaii Island between Saturday night and early Sunday. A direct landfall on the island is not expected, however, substantial precipitation is forecast for the windward and southeastern areas of the Big Island. These regions could experience rainfall totals ranging from 130mm to 250mm.

Isolated localities, particularly in vulnerable zones, may face even more intense downpours, with potential accumulations reaching up to 380mm. Such heavy rainfall significantly increases the risk of localized flooding across affected areas.

Ongoing Post-Hurricane Recovery

The impending storm closely follows Hurricane Lala, which generated considerable disruption across Hawaii only last weekend. Lala was responsible for widespread flooding and left approximately 130,000 customers without electricity. The previous hurricane was also linked to at least one recorded fatality.

Utility crews are still engaged in efforts to restore power to more remote communities that were affected by Hurricane Lala. The consecutive nature of these weather events underscores the intricate challenges the islands face in simultaneously managing natural disaster recovery and preparation.

Government Response and Future Outlook

In response to the dual weather threats, Governor Josh Green has activated state resources, including the provision of emergency housing assistance. This measure aims to support residents already impacted by the previous hurricane and to prepare for potential displacement from Tropical Storm Moke. State officials have urged residents to ensure they have sufficient essential supplies readily available, emphasizing the importance of continuous vigilance.

Meteorological predictions suggest that Moke will maintain its westward trajectory as it moves near the island chain through the early part of Tuesday. Furthermore, another atmospheric front is anticipated to influence the Hawaiian Islands within the coming week. This indicates a potentially prolonged period of heightened weather activity, necessitating sustained readiness from both local authorities and residents.
