Ukrainian Businessman Accuses Intelligence Agency of Assassination Attempt

Ukrainian businessman Vadym Iermolaiev has formally accused Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, the GUR, of orchestrating a bombing attempt against him and his family in Monaco. The attack, which occurred as Iermolaiev exited his residence, resulted in critical injuries to his partner and serious harm to his child, while leaving Iermolaiev hospitalized.

French investigators identified Ukrainian national Anastasiia Berezovska as the primary suspect in the planting of the explosive device. Berezovska was subsequently found dead near Kyiv, leading to the arrest of two individuals: GUR officer Vladyslav Reut and former law enforcement official Oleksandr Zhykovych. While Ukrainian prosecutors characterize the incident as the work of rogue actors, Iermolaiev’s legal team asserts that evidence suggests broader involvement from within the agency’s leadership structure.

The incident presents a significant diplomatic challenge for the administration of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as it marks a rare instance of alleged lethal operations by Ukrainian intelligence on European soil. Iermolaiev, who was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in 2023 over allegations of trade in Russian-occupied territories, maintains that the bombing was a targeted assassination attempt rather than a warning. The motive remains under investigation, with authorities exploring potential links to organized crime or state-sanctioned retribution. The legal proceedings in Kyiv continue to scrutinize the extent of institutional authorization behind the operation.
