The film’s strong performance reinforces a clear trend: family-friendly movies—especially those tapping into nostalgia—remain the most reliable way to bring audiences back to theaters. This sequel builds on a decades-old franchise, appealing to both younger viewers and adults who grew up with the brand.

Other notable releases this year include Amazon’s sci-fi adaptation Project Hail Mary , Disney’s animated Hoppers , and Sony’s GOAT , all targeting similar broad, family-oriented audiences.

Overall, the domestic box office is up 26% year-over-year, according to Comscore, signaling a continued recovery for the theatrical industry.

Super Mario Galaxy was financed by Comcast-owned Universal and Nintendo, and produced by Illumination, the studio behind the Minions franchise. While its opening falls slightly short of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023—which ultimately grossed $1.36 billion worldwide—it still represents a major commercial success.

The film launched early on Tuesday to capitalize on U.S. spring break demand, earning $190 million across the U.S. and Canada by Sunday, alongside $182.4 million internationally. Mexico emerged as its largest overseas market.
