Steel Dynamics eyes 90% mill use as aluminum ramp resumes

Executives cited record steel shipments and cash flow, with Q4 and 2027 plans tied to operating rates and aluminum progress.

Steel Dynamics eyes 90% mill use as aluminum ramp resumes

Steel Dynamics said on its Q3 2026 earnings call on Oct. 20 that it targets 90% hot-strip mill utilization by year-end 2026 as its aluminum ramp resumes. Reaction pending.

The company framed the utilization target as part of its Q4 and 2027 outlook, according to the earnings call recap. Hot-strip utilization measures how much of the mill’s available production capacity is being used, making the year-end level a direct operating marker for steel output.

Steel and aluminum capacity

Executives also cited record steel shipments and cash flow for Q3 2026, according to the recap. No dollar amount for cash flow or tonnage figure for shipments was included in the supplied material, so the operating update rests on management’s qualitative record characterization and the 90% utilization target.

The aluminum restart adds a second

capacity track for investors to follow into 2027.

If the ramp continues while the hot-strip mill reaches the year-end target, the company would enter next year with higher operating leverage across steel and aluminum. If utilization falls short or aluminum progress slows, the effect would be felt first in Steel Dynamics’ production mix and then in investor expectations for metals margins.

By year-end 2026, the company’s hot-strip utilization target will be the dated checkpoint for whether the Q3 operating momentum carried into Q4.
