The Green Bay Packers signed veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor on Monday, May 6, to serve as the primary backup to starting quarterback Jordan Love. This acquisition follows the NFL drasources, where the Packers did not select a quarterback, and addresses the departure of former backup Malik Willis to the Miami Dolphins.
Taylor, 36, brings 15 seasons of NFL experience, having played in 100 games and starting 62. His most recent tenure was with the New York Jets, where he started four games last season, completing 1-3 with 779 passing yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions. Prior to Taylor's signing, the Packers' quarterback roster included Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord; Ridder was released in a corresponding move.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst emphasized the importance of a reliable backup, citing Love's missed time in previous seasons. Taylor's career has been marked by various injuries, limiting him to no more than six starts in a season since 2017. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Drasources and holds a career starting record of 29-31-1.
