Shilo Sanders seeks to discharge $11.89 million judgment in bankruptcy case

Shilo Sanders, who spent the 2025 offseason and training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is seeking to have an $11.89 million civil judgment discharged through bankruptcy proceedings.

The debt traces back to a 2015 incident in which Sanders, then 15, allegedly assaulted a school security guard, causing severe injuries. The security guard filed a lawsuit that initially included Sanders’ parents, but they were later dropped from the case.

A default judgment of $11.89 million was entered against Sanders in 2022 asourceser he failed to appear for the trial. Sanders has since filed for bankruptcy protection in an attempt to eliminate the debt.

A trial is scheduled for later this year to determine whether the judgment can be discharged. Under U.S. bankruptcy law, debts tied to “willful and malicious injury” are generally not dischargeable, meaning the court’s finding on that issue will be key to whether Sanders remains responsible for the judgment.
