Asian Markets Volatile Amid Earnings Anticipation and Energy Supply Uncertainty

Asian equity markets exhibited volatility on Monday as investors prepared for the upcoming corporate earnings season. South Korean stocks declined 2.2%, while the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan fell 0.3%. Market activity remained constrained by holiday closures in Japan and the United States.

Energy markets experienced downward pressure as Brent crude futures dropped 1.6% to US$103.01 per barrel. This decline followed conflicting signals regarding potential increases in Russian energy exports, despite ongoing geopolitical instability in the Gulf region.

Investors are closely monitoring the sustainability of AI-driven capital expenditure as corporate bond spreads widen to multi-year highs. Rising borrowing costs and elevated Treasury yields are intensifying concerns regarding the refinancing capacity of firms as debt matures.

Macroeconomic focus shifts to upcoming US inflation data, with headline CPI projected to rise to 3.7% annually. Market pricing currently reflects an 85% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike by December, as central banks globally maintain a focus on near-term monetary tightening.
