The Russian Athletics Federation has initiated legal proceedings at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to contest sanctions imposed by World Athletics. These measures, in effect since February 2022, prohibit Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international events. The federation argues these restrictions impede its operational capacity and limit its ability to represent national athletes globally.
CAS to Review World Athletics Sanctions
This filing follows a separate appeal submitted on July 9, challenging the World Athletics Council’s decision to extend the existing ban. While the International Olympic Committee provisionally lifted Russia’s suspension in July, World Athletics maintains its independent stance on exclusion. The federation contends that these restrictions are disproportionate compared to those applied by other international sporting bodies, which have eased their own sanctions.
Other Federations Ease Restrictions
Several other federations, including those governing gymnastics, aquatics, and boxing, have recently eased participation requirements for Russian and Belarusian athletes. The outcome of this CAS challenge could establish a significant precedent for the autonomy of international governing bodies versus broader Olympic movement policies regarding national representation in global sports.
Boris Yaryshevskiy, chief executive director of Russian Athletics, stated that the sanctions are "unprecedented" and hinder the sport's development in Russia. The federation aims to "restore justice" through the courts.
