Officials said the capital came under fire after the air force issued an alert warning of approaching drones. The alert preceded strikes that, officials said, impacted the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv's historic heart.
Video posted online appeared to show a high-speed drone smashing into the academy; officials said they had not immediately confirmed whether the footage depicted the incident or provided details on casualties or damage assessments.
The capital has increasingly faced Russian drones and missiles as the conflict grinds into its fifth year, a period widely regarded as Europe’s worst since World War II. Officials said emergency services were deployed to assess affected sites and to manage air-raid precautions in central districts.
Officials said they were monitoring for further strikes over the next 24 hours.
