The Reserve Bank of India completed net sales of 1 trillion rupees of government bonds this financial year, reducing system liquidity and, officials said, reinforcing expectations of firmer interest-rate policy. Market reaction was pending.
Reserve Bank of India bond sales
Data showed this is the first time in a decade the central bank has recorded net bond sales of this magnitude in a single fiscal year. Officials said the move reduced excess liquidity in the banking system after earlier operations aimed at attracting dollars.
Analysts said the central bank's net issuance has raised expectations that monetary conditions will be tighter going forward and that higher supply can put upward pressure on benchmark yields as markets absorb the debt. Analysts added that some dealers expect cumulative sales to rise further before the fiscal year ends.
Analysts said issuance could double by December 31, 2026; officials said markets will watch the pace of net issuance through that date for guidance on system liquidity and the likely path of interest rates. The main open question is whether banks and nonbank investors will absorb additional supply without a sustained rise in yields.
